There is something, about staying on water. It is quiet, but not empty. The lake moves slowly. With it your thoughts start to slow down too. Dal Lake is not just a tourist spot. It is a place where people actually live. Wooden houseboats float calmly on the lake carrying stories of families, travelers and time itself. The lake has a lot of character. Dal Lake houseboats are a part of it.

Arriving at the Lake

When you first get to Dal Lake everything seems to be moving. The shikaras are going in all directions people are talking loud across the water. The houseboats are close together like a neighborhood on the water. It can feel really crowded and too much to handle at first. A lot of boatmen are yelling, trying to get you to take a ride or stay on their boat.. As you go further away from the main part Dal Lake starts to get quieter. That is when you start to get what Dal Lake is, like.

Shikaras on Dal Lake

On Dal Lake you don’t just stay, you become part of the water.

Inside the Houseboat

When you get into a houseboat it feels like you are in a time. The inside of a houseboat is made of wood that has been carved and the walls and ceilings have nice patterns on them. The rooms are cozy and warm. They have carpets and curtains and little things that show what Kashmiri culture is like. A houseboat is not a place to sleep it is a house that floats on the water. When you eat on a houseboat the food is often made in a way and it feels like you are getting a personal touch it is very slow and nice not, like staying in a big hotel.

Morning on the Lake

The early morning is when Dal Lake feels most alive. Dal Lake is really beautiful at this time. Before the city wakes up Dal Lake is calm and silent. The people who live near Dal Lake are just starting to wake up. Shikaras are moving slowly across the water of Dal Lake. They are carrying all sorts of things like vegetables and flowers and daily essentials to the people who live on Dal Lake. Some people are going to work on Dal Lake while others are just starting their day on Dal Lake. The mountains and sky are reflected in the water of Dal Lake. It makes everything feel still. The moment is so peaceful, at Dal Lake. It is a moment you do not want to rush at Dal Lake.
