There will always be a time on every trek when the path ends and the adventure starts. On a Kashmir trek, that will happen subtly. You are taking your first steps along a well-known path and then suddenly find yourself enveloped in mountain ranges so huge that they stop you dead in your tracks. The atmosphere changes, becoming lighter, cooler, and even clearer. It’s as if you’ve walked out of your comfort zone and stepped into the unknown.
The First Ascent: Leaving the Familiar Behind
The trek began at dawn when the valley was only half awake. The track meandered slowly into green meadows and quaint little villages where everything happened at a leisurely pace. Shepherds came along leading their flocks, and the murmurs of faraway brooks were like music following our footsteps.
However, gradually, the terrain began to alter. There was less vegetation, the atmosphere turned harsher, and the ascent became steeper. Each step demanded greater effort, but each step seemed to hold a deeper significance than the last. It was no longer just a walk. It had become a passage from the familiar to the unfamiliar. And somewhere along the way, in the struggle and in the silence, you find yourself transforming.
“The mountains do not challenge you they reveal you.”
Days That Blur Into the Wild
As days went by, time ceased to be relevant. There were no deadlines, no rush, no distractions. It was just about walking, breathing, and being aware. The scenery would shift continuously from fields to mountain trails, from brooks to glaciers, and from hills to high alpine valleys. Some days were smooth sailing, while others would pose challenges at every single step, yet even during the toughest days, one would experience some sort of peace. The type of peace that can be experienced when one is entirely present in the moment.
The Great Lakes: Moments You Do Not Expect
It happens unexpectedly when one is on the trail. After walking for hours along winding trails, crossing rivers, and ascending gradual hills, you encounter an alpine lake lying silently among the mountains. The lake does not make its presence known; rather, it just comes into view, having been patiently awaiting your arrival. One comes to a sudden halt without being conscious of it. This action is not prompted by fatigue but rather by the desire to pause and absorb the essence of the environment. The purity and stillness of the water create a perfect reflection of the sky, where clouds seem to drift both above and below the surface simultaneously. The mountains that surround the alpine lake serve as silent guards, making one feel like they have stumbled upon an untainted piece of nature. One may reach for the camera, yet what remains is not the photograph but rather the experience. The chilly atmosphere, the wind whispering in the distance, and the stillness of the water become ingrained in one's memory as one sits and admires the surroundings.Time passes more slowly here. It is not necessary to hurry forward. No need for words. It dawns on you that the journey is about far more than just getting to this point – it is about all the emotions this experience provokes within you once you get there. Somewhere along the way, you come to realize that this is what you’ll recall later on.
Campfires and Cold Nights
When the day finally fades out, the colors of the mountains start changing into oranges and greys from greens and blues. The temperature suddenly drops, bringing along with itself an atmosphere filled with a cool breeze. Tents are made, bags are put aside, and for the first time during the day, people rest.Small bonfires start lighting in the dark night as people gather together, chatting among themselves. Some of them simply sit in silence enjoying the warmth of a little fire. This is how talks at the campsite go, with people telling stories of the day, laughing at the difficulties and sharing moments of silent thoughts.Looking up in the sky reveals a different world than usually seen back home in your comfortable bed. Here, under the starlit sky, you can see countless more stars than usual as the sky becomes entirely transformed. The Milky Way is clearly visible, shining brightly in its full glory. As the night goes by, the atmosphere becomes even colder. However, it feels good as you are surrounded by mountains.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Traversing the region of Kashmir does not involve merely attaining the goal. It also involves the journey, the process itself. The mountain does not give anything to the people easily, but once achieved, the sense of fulfillment that comes with it makes the people go back for more – not for the sake of seeing the view but for that feeling of being truly alive.
